When I was preparing the article about the death of Hugo Wolf two weeks ago, I listened to different performances of the song I chose to illustrate it. If you remember, it was Ergebung, no. 5 from the Sechs geistliche Lieder nach Gedichten von Eichendorff, a work for mixed choir.
Max Reger's arrangement for male choir caught my attention during my review. This composer devoted a great deal of time to Hugo Wolf's work between 1898 (at his 25) and 1914 (two years before he died). He revised it, published it, and also made arrangements, especially for sacred or spiritually inspired Lieder. For example, in addition to the cycle with poems by Eichendorff, he arranged for voice and organ five of the Mörike-Lieder or the Geistliche Lieder from the Spanisches Liederbuch, so that they could be performed during religious services in churches.
Back then, in an article about Wolf, I wanted to share Wolf's original work, of course. It turns out I am short on time, I was unable to prepare the article of this week, and I needed a special song that would be a new momento musical.
Wolf's Ergebung arranged by Reger is a perfect choice: I wanted to share it with you, you have the context fresh (or you can refresh it) and it works as a small introduction to Max Reger's official presentation, that will arrive in a few weeks; 2023 marks 150 years from his birth this year (I already chose the Lied that I'll share!)
