As I said yesterday, this week I’ve delayed the post one day because today, the Schubertiade Vilabertran 2015, the 23th festival, is presented. Many things are to be highlighted but first things first, we should know the song recitals. Matthias Goerne will be with us, of course, but also, for the very first time, Measha Brueggergosman, Luca Pisaroni, Sarah Connolly and Dorothea Röschmann. Besides, there will be the debut concert of Oddur Jonnson. Here we go!
- There are two recitals entirely dedicated to Schubert; the first one, on 21th August, with the bass baritone Luca Pisaroni and the pianist Wolfram Rieger. I really like their program, there are songs as beautiful as Auf der Donau or Der Wanderer an der Mond or as fun as the three Italian songs L'incanto degli occhi, Il modo di prender moglie or Il traditor deluso. The second recital of Schubert's songs is by the baritone Oddur Jonsson and Julia Pujol, that will perform Schwanengesang and the "harpist's songs" (and I would say that we are well prepared to listen to those songs here on Liederabend).
- There will also be Schubert's songs at recitals of the three female singers. The soprano Measha Brueggergosman and Justus Zeyen will dedicate him the first part of the opening concert (20th August); the second part includes Ravel's Shéhérezade and Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder in their original version for piano. The mezzosoprano Sarah Connolly and Malcolm Martineau (27th August) will perform the three Ellens Gesänge (an opportunity to listen to the first two less known); she'll also sing Frauenliebe und -leben by Schumann and a selection of songs from Roussel, Britten, Gourney and Turina at the second part (she might not know how happy I'm because she's singing Sleep by Gurney!). Dorothea Röschmann also accompanied by Malcolm Martineau (28th August) will sing "Mignon's songs" (meaning that we’ll be able to listen to the harpist and Mignon the very same day) and then, a selection from Wolf's Mörike Lieder, from Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn and also the Rückert Lieder by Mahler.
- Matthias Goerne and Alexander Schmalcz’s recital (23th August) is entirely dedicated to Schumann, with the two Liederkreis, op. 39 and op. 24 as a strong points. Do you remember Liebesbotschaft? The Lied that became an earworm during my holidays some time ago? Yes, that lied, too.
- More vocal works by Schubert, but in a different format, with choir. The last concert of the Schubertíade, August 29th, is dedicated to the works of Schubert for choir, choir and soloist and choir and piano, including the cantata Mirjam Siegesgesang. Principal figures are the Cor de Cambra de la Diputació de Girona, the soprano Elena Copons and the pianist Francisco Poyato.
- There is one more concert with vocal music that I would like to emphasize: on Saturday 22nd August, Das Lied von der Erde by Gustav Mahler is performed (Is it a Symphony? A Lieder cycle? Both?), the chamber version of Arnold Schoenberg. The soloists will be Matthias Goerne and Charles Reid, who will sing accompanied by an orchestral ensemble conducted by Josep Pons.
- Let's move on, more briefly, to the instrumental concerts. We'll have, in two morning sessions (22th and 23th August), the complete Bach's cello suites with Arnau Tomas, where Arnau will explain the works during the concert. Another special concert for families, Descordant Franz Schubert (hard to translate, the title is a pun, "descordar" means in Catalan unfasten and "corda" means string) with soloists of the Camerata 432 and David Puertas as narrator.
- There is a "Minifestival" of quartets in three consecutive days 24th, 25th and 26th August: Quartet Casals, Quartet Gerhard and Cuarteto Klimt. There will also be two piano recitals with Ignasi Cambra (26th August) and Iván Martín (25th August), and the debut concert of the cellist Fermín Villanueva accompanied by the pianist Stephan König (24th August); In that concert two works by the composers Stephan König and Jordi Cervelló will be premiered.
Totally, there are seventeen concerts during a period of 10 days, from 20th to 29th August; There will also be four conferences of which I’ll talk about within a few weeks.
