The fooled Count

Song of the week: Harfenspieler III - Wer nie sein Brot mit Tränen ass (H. Wolf) - D. Henschel, K. Negano

Le baiser à la dérobée - Jean Honoré FragonardThis is the 8th post in the Wilhelm Meister's series, the last of this season; the Goethe's characters will come back in September. Today I'll tell you something that happens while Wilhelm is at the Count's castle, a story about the Count and the Countess. I’m afraid there isn't any song linked to that story, but I'm telling you anyway because it will become important at the end of the novel. Besides, the story is very funny.

Wilhelm likes the Countess a lot, but he's very aware of his vow of not having any love affair with a woman; the Countess also likes Wilhelm very much, but she's very aware of her wedding vows too [...]

Song of the week: Memories (C. Ives) - S. Graham, P. L. Aimard

Shadow artist - N. Rockwell

Two boys are at the opera house, waiting for the show to begin. They are so excited that they can't stop moving, talking very fast, whistling... until someone silences them because the curtain rises. This is what the composer, Charles Ives, explains at the first part of his song Memories.

BUG. An insect or similar organism, such as a centipede or an earwig.
Small animal prone to be crushed with a slipper.

The first definition is from the dictionary; the second is from a friend and it's very useful when you're not good at Zoology. Please don't misunderstand me, it's just a saying; I don't spend my time crushing ladybugs or butterflies, let alone bees. I do mosquitoes though, in self-defence.
Ladybirds, crickets, cicadas, bees, cockroaches...Today we are starting a new ten-song list about ten different bugs (and from ten different composers).

Celebrating Strauss

Song of the week: Hymnus (R. Strauss) - T. Hampson, C. Thielemann

Euterpe - J. Handmann

Richard Strauss wrote about 200 Lieder, and only around 50 of them are part of the repertoire; the rest is hardly ever performed. We could say that’s pretty common, a composer’s complete corpus is rare in the repertoire, with the exception of composers such as Mahler and Duparc, who wrote just few songs. Those fifty Lieder are mostly performed with orchestral accompaniment instead of piano accompaniment; that's also normal, Strauss and Mahler fathered orchestral lieder. Some of these famous Lieder were not orchestrated by Strauss but by other composers during his lifetime. I understand that he was aware of that and consented. One last thing: among the Lieder that Strauss composed originally for voice and orchestra, only four are performed on regular basis.

Dog roses, forget-me-nots, daisies, buttercups and clover - Otto Ottesen

First post just published on the new website (remember last week we said goodbye to Blogger. If you come across something that doesn't work properly, please let me know asap!). To celebrate this new era, we are dedicating this post to Art Song. I can hear you saying: “Of course we are, as always!” Yes, but this time with a difference: today we are listening to the voices of composers, poets and experts through ten quotes.
